Huntsville...
Ontario Parks will continue to operate all of their provincial parks during the Summit. Algonquin Park and of course Algonquin Lakeside Inn are in close proximity to the G8 and so you may have minor delays due to security checkpoints and detours in and around the Huntsville area. Anyone travelling to us and the park should give themselves extra driving time.

Road restrictions will begin on the morning of June 23 and are currently planned to stay in place until June 27. This includes restrictions travelling on a portion of Highway 60.

No closures or restrictions within Algonquin Park are expected, however visitors heading to us and the park through Huntsville, can expect some minor detours as security measures will be in place. The best travel route to Algonquin Lakeside Inn and the Park is , from Hwy 11 to Hwy 60, is to take Muskoka Road 117 east from Bracebridge, over to Dorset, and then Hwy 35 north to Hwy 60. This scenic route will only add approximately 20 minutes of extra driving time.

Any questions please feel free to call.

www.algonquininn.com
e-mail stay@algonquininn.comAlgonquin Lakeside Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779956394272540411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35212559048061601.post-52557683352355044772010-06-04T10:24:00.003-04:002011-06-05T20:24:13.528-04:00Fishing, Many People Have QuestionsWe often get questions regarding fishing.
We are told Oxtongue Lake has large mouth bass. Everyone fishing requires a fishing license and one may be purchased either at the local convenience store or at the Algonquin Outfitters which is just a short walk from where we are. We do not have a fishing boat on site but some people have tried going out in a canoe for an hour. Here is a link which may be helpful to any
anglers who want answers to their questions which we may not have.
http://muskokaoutdoors.ca/blog/2010/06/03/2010-fishing-seasons-in-muskoka/

www.algonquininn.com
e-mail stay@algonquininn.comAlgonquin Lakeside Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779956394272540411noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35212559048061601.post-68672583793041072902010-05-22T19:57:00.006-04:002011-06-05T20:24:29.241-04:00Here's to great guests

Thanks to great weather early this year. We have had guests from Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Australia, USA. Our Latest Guests were from the UK and US and were on a month long tour across Canada. They were obviously good friends and we could see why and were infact blogging their travels. The two days spent at the Algonquin Inn were spent hiking the trails in Algonquin Park, fishing, Kayaking on Oxtongue Lake and learning as much as they could about the area and the goings on in Huntsville. They had a great time and we are glad that we had the privalige to meet them.

http://www.algonquininn.com/

e-mail stay@algonquininn.com
Algonquin Lakeside Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779956394272540411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35212559048061601.post-22285338173300876062010-05-22T18:29:00.002-04:002011-06-05T20:24:42.276-04:00cruise across Canada

http://www.algonquininn.com/

e-mail stay@algonquininn.com

Algonquin Lakeside Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779956394272540411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35212559048061601.post-57808330959097563982010-05-12T10:07:00.004-04:002011-06-05T20:25:05.294-04:00Spring Moose 2010Went for a drive through the park on Hwy 60 and on the way back, was happy to see this guy standing by the roadside, quietly chewing on branches. Well the song list is now out, and yes Algonquin Park made the list....
After months of campaigning and voting, Canadians selected the places across the nation they wanted to see immortalized in song and the singer-songwriters they wanted to write those songs. CBC Radio 2’s sponsored Great Canadian Song Quest challenged artists compose tributes to Canada’s favourite places during a four week span, and the final songs, lovingly crafted by some of Canada’s brightest stars, are finally complete.
“We’ve really made musical history here,” said Mark Steinmetz, director of music programming, CBC Radio. “Never before have Canadians from coast-to-coast been able to have such direct, immediate influence on the music that matters to them. These songs are for all of us—music about Canada, by Canadians, for Canadians.”

Here are The Final Songs, and yes Algonquin Park is repersenting Ontario

· Where They Left it Wild, (Algonquin Park, Ont.), by Hawksley Workman

and here’s a link to hear samples of each:

BC: OH SUSANNA and TOFINO
AB: JAY SPARROW and HOODOOS/BADLANDS
SK: DEEP DARK WOODS and GOOD TIME CHARLIE'S at THE PLAINS HOTEL
MB: CHANTAL KREVIAZUK and WASKADA
ON: HAWKSLEY WORKMAN and ALGONQUIN PARK
QC: MARTHA WAINWRIGHT and THE BLACK SHEEP INN
NB: DAVID MYLES and HOPEWELL ROCKS
PEI: CATHERINE MACLELLAN and SINGING SANDS BEACH
NS: JOEL PLASKETT and THE CABOT TRAIL
NF: HEY ROSETTA! and GROS MORNE NATIONAL PARK
NUNAVUT : LUCIE IDLOUT and the ROAD TO NOWHERE
NWT: DANA SIPOS and the TUKTOYAKTUK PINGOS
YUKON: KIM BARLOW and DAWSON CITY

www.algonquininn.com
e-mail stay@algonquininn.com
Algonquin Lakeside Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779956394272540411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35212559048061601.post-60690576906747244392009-11-08T09:03:00.005-05:002011-06-05T20:27:04.005-04:00Solar Heating comes to the Algonquin InnAt long last the work has finally started on our Solar Heating system for the Algonquin Inn.
After 2 years of planing and waiting for the right time to start work ,end of season,
construction is well on the way.
This will mean that we will have Solar heated water for all of our rooms and suites,
this is the first phase of two,the second phase is to also have the Restaurant and reception for the Algonquin Inn running on it's own separate Solar powered hot water system.
The net result will be a significant reduction in out overall carbon foot print,as hot water is the the most significant area of consumption of power.
This is a continuation of our environmental plan which has already earned us the 4 keys eco rating from the Hotel Association of Canada out of a possible 5.

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; The official fall colour peak for the Sugar and Red Maple canopy was Thursday, October 1, 2009.

Reds, oranges, and yellows continue to dominate the landscape making for impressive viewing, but increasing leaf fall from the forest canopy is resulting in more bare branches at the tops of trees throughout the Sugar Maple forest.

Understory areas are ablaze with colour change as they typically change later than the canopy as a result of the protection provided by overhead leaves against frost, cold temperatures, etc. Excellent understory colour is expected for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

For late season fall colour watchers, Tamarack (Larch) colour change is coming on strong showing green-yellow foliage already. Birches and Large-toothed Aspen are also progressing, with birches nearing their peak.

Some observers are commenting that this year's colour is one of the best since official record keeping began in 1972. Substantial rainfall amounts during summer, and temperatures dropping to near freezing in late August/early September, are thought to have resulted in this year's brilliant colours. In combination with other factors, such as shortening daylight length, trees have been rapidly breaking down chlorophyll (the green food manufacturing pigment in leaves) revealing Algonquin's outstanding fall colour.

In many observers' opinions, Algonquin Park's upcoming overcast and rainy (and even snowy) weather enhances fall foliage viewing when compared to sunny days. Thus, a rainy day trip to Algonquin Park can have substantial rewards. Check the weather forecast for more details.

Plan now for your Algonquin Park fall foliage trip any time from now to mid-October to see Algonquin's brightest season.

This fall foliage colour report will be updated as the season progresses. Check back for updates.

--

Background

For the past 35 years, the average peak of Sugar and Red Maples in Algonquin Park has been September 27 (with a range from September 15 [1982] to October 9 [1996]. This variation in the peak is a result of numerous environmental conditions such as temperature, frost, precipitation, winds, etc., thus the exact timing of peak colour can not be precisely determined until it happens.

Traditionally, higher elevation areas of Algonquin Park, such as the western portion of the Highway 60 Corridor and the western half of the backcountry change colour earlier than the eastern half, as a result of the east's lower elevation.
